There’s an increasingly greater proportion of people looking for public services to take the lead and adapt to the changes that the pandemic will bring. This is the case with leading to respond to the pandemic but also with tackling the climate crisis.
Will that translate into the public is comfortable with councils experimenting with new ways of working? Maybe, it’s about empowering those people trust the most, and not just in public services, but in other sectors too, be it care home workers, nurses, doctors, engineers or delivery drivers.
While ideally, people would want the state to act quickly and have all the evidence at its disposal, people recognise that in the current situation, that’s not always possible, but what they do want is for government to be transparent about how it is making its decisions. That’s not just about evidence on how to deal with the health impacts of the virus, but also the socio-economic impacts.
