How might we encourage people to develop solutions to 15-minute neighbourhoods?

In a previous post, I blogged about the work we’re starting to help people improve their understanding of the area to improve collaboration in improving outcomes? This post will focus on how we can help people understand the challenges & opportunities in the local area with a specific focus on 15-minute neighbourhoods.

I blogged about work I’ve done in previous organisations on the issue, with a particular focus on designing service patterns to ways of living and working in a neighbourhood and anticipating & responding to future scenarios for local public services, including developing neighbourhood platforms to invest in the social & community infrastructure of the area.

I’ve written too about the citizens’ assembly we’re developing on 15-minute neighbourhoods, working with Democratic Society. You can read about what our residents thought about our previous round of assemblies, as the UK’s first permanent citizens’ assembly, and you see examples of other permanent citizen bodies by the @sortitionfoundation.

We will be using the qualitative & quantitative insights, engagement with services, partners & residents, to enable services & partners to understand:

  • The key needs that residents want 15-minute neighbourhoods to meet
  • The opportunities for community-led solutions to meet those needs
  • How they can support residents to develop & scale community-led solutions to meet those needs

This will help support the wider citizens’ assembly work and to do this we will:

  • Discover the relationships between the data & insights to understand the needs & motivations residents have at a neighbourhood level
  • Visualise the relationships in a way that reveal opportunities that services, partners & residents could each do to meet those needs
  • Use the visualisation & engagement to design a process on how services & partners can help communities develop solutions to meet those needs
  • Test out the design process with services, residents & partners in a specific neighbourhood/need

Below are examples we’ve been inspired by on community-led solutions for 15-minute neighbourhoods. What examples have inspired you?

In my next post, I’ll focus on ways we want to work with residents to understand how the borough is tackling issues and helping people anticipate & respond to future trends.
