As the Inclusion Lead for Adur & Worthing Councils, you’ll be at the forefront of bringing our inclusion work to life. This is more than policies; it’s about fostering communities where everyone feels welcome, valued, and empowered to thrive.

By embedding safeguarding, equality, and cohesion into everything we do, you will create a fairer, more connected place for all. Your leadership will align with the Council’s ambitions and set the standard for inclusive, impactful change across the area. Below is an indicative week in the life (not every week will be the same!) of an Inclusion Lead.

Apply now by the 15th of December!

Monday: Laying the foundation for inclusion

  • Morning: Lead an “Inclusion Sprint” with Designated Safeguarding Officers and council colleagues to explore how safeguarding practices can better align with our Inclusion & Cohesion’s focus on reducing inequalities and improving access to services.
  • Midday: Work with HR colleagues aligning on recruitment strategies that embed inclusive practices. Discuss adjustments to job adverts and interview processes to reach underrepresented groups and create equitable pathways for employment.
  • Midday: Collaborate with a community organisation / startup to explore digital tools that support inclusion, such as platforms for people to navigate local services or tools that simplify safeguarding referrals.
  • Afternoon: Visit a frontline team to gather insights on how inclusion and safeguarding practices can be better tailored to meet operational challenges.

Tuesday: Developing innovative solutions

  • Morning: Work with participation colleagues to host a community hackathon to design initiatives that empower minoritised groups, such as peer support networks for care leavers or peer exchange for people seeking sanctuary.
  • Midday: Work with participation colleagues to explore adapting the Participation Lab approach to bring together frontline staff from the Councils and partners to develop solutions to inclusion and safeguarding.
  • Afternoon: Work with wellbeing colleagues to integrate safeguarding and equality practices into mental health and employee support initiatives.

Wednesday: Building community connections

  • Morning: Visit a community centre to participate in storytelling sessions with veterans, care leavers, and residents from diverse backgrounds. Use their insights to inform policies that reflect the lived experiences of those the Inclusion and Cohesion work seeks to support.
  • Midday: Work with participation and service design colleagues to launch a participatory design project where residents help shape initiatives aimed at reducing barriers to inclusion, such as improving digital accessibility or enhancing language support for non-English speakers.
  • Afternoon: Present findings to the Corporate Leadership Team, positioning inclusion and safeguarding as essential components of broader community resilience and cohesion.

Thursday: Turning strategy into action

  • Morning: Work with participation colleagues to design a Community Leaders event with council staff, community leaders, and external partners to pilot initiatives like micro-grants for grassroots inclusion projects or innovative approaches to tackling domestic abuse.
  • Midday: Work with the Safer Communities Partnership to develop a campaign addressing violence prevention, aligning this effort with the strategy’s call to foster safer, more cohesive communities.
  • Afternoon: Work with external funding colleagues to prepare a funding bid to scale initiatives that align with the strategy’s pillars, such as promoting equality, reducing social isolation, and celebrating diversity.

Friday: Reflecting, learning and amplifying impact

  • Morning: Join with learning & development colleagues to co-design a training module for managers on safeguarding and inclusion. Focus on equipping leaders with skills to address inequalities and support vulnerable employees.
  • Midday: Work with communications colleagues to shape an awareness campaign aligned with the Inclusion and Cohesion work. Develop storytelling content highlighting community partnerships and progress on safeguarding initiatives.
  • Afternoon: Meet with the Assistant Director of People and Change to align next week’s priorities with the strategy’s overarching goals, ensuring progress continues toward building inclusive and cohesive communities.

Be part of our change!

The Inclusion Lead role is central to delivering Adur & Worthing Councils’ inclusion work, helping to foster a community where everyone belongs and can thrive.
